By Ron Brocato Clarion Herald As the weather cooled during the fall sports season, New Orleans-area Catholic schools turned up the heat as archdiocesan schools claimed five state championships in three varsity sports.
And two title trophies went to Pope John Paul II’s boys’ and girls’ swim teams.
Led by two outstanding swimmers, Eric Ring and Mady Hill, the Jaguars claimed the Division IV hardware at the LHSAA championship meet on Nov. 21 at the SPAR Aquatic Center in Sulphur.
Ring won the 200- and 500-yard freestyle events and swam a leg on the victorious 200-medley relay as the Jaguars scored 323 points.
Hill was part of the Jaguars’ division record-setting 200-yard medley relay team and added gold medals in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-butterfly events.
Swimming was the stellar sport of the fall season as Dominican and St. Scholastica also claimed state championships for girls’ teams in divisions I and II, respectively, while Holy Cross won the
Division II boys’ championship on Nov. 22.
Fall was the time of the year in which Jesuit cross-country runners also thrived.
For the fourth consecutive year, the Blue Jays took home the Division I state championship. And, once again, it wasn’t close as Brady Mullen(14:44.22) and Brady Monahan (14:58.28) escorted the field of five schools across the Northwestern State finish line on Nov. 18.
Catholic League rival Brother Martin took the runner-up team trophy.
