For centuries, artists have tried to depict what the Blessed Mother looks like, so what happened on Dec. 9, 1531, on a hill outside of present-day Mexico City changed history.
As Catherine Arnold wrote in the “Under Twenty” section of the Dec. 12, 1963, Clarion Herald, Juan Diego, an Aztec Indian and convert of the Franciscan Friars, reported seeing a beautiful lady who told him she was the Blessed Virgin Mary. Filling his cloak with roses that miraculously appeared in winter, Juan took them to his bishop and opened the garment: Inside was the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
