After a long day, I was sitting at home, and I turned on the television. When flipping the channels I ended up watching a history documentary.
The air conditioner was keeping the house really cool on a hot day. The kids were unusually quiet. Even though I really enjoy talks about the past and historical events, without warning I fell asleep. Sometime later, I woke up and I felt that I needed to complete viewing the talk about the ancient past. It interested me to view and learn how people lived before Christ. Especially people without any knowledge of the God of Abraham.
At a later point, I was able to watch several videos on the Minoan people that lived in the Isle of Crete. It said that they are Europe’s first civilization. Some people might not agree with that statement because it was too far south in the Mediterranean.
It seems that the Minoans were able to thrive and be a point of reference for prosperity to the Greeks and Romans. They were extremely wealthy through trade. Their central location and ingenuity assisted with acquiring wealth and knowledge. All of this accomplished without a military.
After several natural disasters, earthquakes, volcano eruptions, the island never recovered, and they were eventually taken over by mainland Greece. Learning about the Minoan Bronze Age people, from roughly 2700 to 1450 BC gave me a lot to think about.
Some days pass and I read the readings for Mass. The gospel was Matthew 11:20-24 and it said “Jesus began to reproach the towns where most of his mighty deeds had been done, since they had not repented. Chorazin, Bethsaida, Capernaum were called out by Jesus for not repenting. The entire towns were not pleasing to God for lack of repentance.”
These history documentaries give you a lot of information about what occurred thousands of years ago. They tell you they drink water from golden cups, and their palaces were covered in beautiful art. They paint the picture that they were successful. I’m sure they were in a sense, and they were more advanced than their ancestors but according to what Jesus desires in a people, he has made it clear. The ancients had their comforts and in the 21st century we have ours, especially hard-working air conditioners.
This reminds me to take a moment to thank God that I live in a time that has the Holy Catholic Church with the Divine revelation of Jesus Christ. The church with the sacrament of reconciliation to be as an individual and all as people pleasing to God. Do you talk to your children about history with Jesus Christ in mind?
