The Catholic belief in guardian angels is really important to Catholics, especially young children who pray for their own protection from harm and parents who pray for the guardian angels to protect their children. It is a prayer and an image that it often given as gifts at a baby's Baptism, but where did it come from? How do we know angels are protection us?
This teaching is rooted in the Bible! Sacred Scripture contains numerous examples of angels coming to earth and helping the people of God. Then, in Matthew 18:10 Jesus himself affirms the existence of angels assigned to individuals who represent them before God and watch over their well-being. How cool is that!?!
The devotion to guardian angels became more popular in the Middle Ages and through Saint Bernard of Clairvaux - shout out to all our students at OLPS Chalmette! The feast dedicated to guardian angels was officially introduced in the 16th century and added to the Roman calendar by Pope Paul V in 1615.
Guardian angels are citizens of heave and walk with God's children as a whole and as individual believers, giving protection, guidance, and enlightenment. The Catholic Catechism emphasizes their watchful care and intercession throughout human life. Overall, the belief in guardian angels remains a cherished aspect of Catholic piety, offering believers a sense of divine guidance and protection every day.
