Dr. Raenell Houston Superintendent of Catholic Schools
It is hard to believe that summer is winding down! This summer, we have been busy planning and preparing for a productive and fruitful year. Catechists, teachers and staff members have participated in numerous professional development workshops and retreats. Additionally, many of our school leaders and parish catechetical leaders have attended conferences and taken advantage of opportunities for ongoing faith formation, and I sincerely appreciate their dedication to our ministry.
On Friday, Aug. 2, all faculty and staff from Catholic schools across the archdiocese gathered for a Day of Formation with Archbishop Aymond and the staff of the Department of Catholic Education and Faith Formation. We began our day by celebrating Mass as a faith community. We heard from a guest speaker who nourished our faith and inspired our hearts to begin a new school year. Lastly, we recommitted ourselves to the vocation of Catholic education. It was a powerful encounter.
Over the next three weeks, we will welcome students and parents as we begin the 2024-25 academic year! In addition, we will also welcome students and families into parish schools of religion, RCIA and RCIC programs. Please join me in praying for all of those entrusted to our care.
Recently, members of the Department of Catholic Education and Faith Formation had the opportunity to spend time with our Parish Catechetical Leaders (PCLs) during their Day of Reflection. We also had the pleasure of holding our annual retreat and conference for Catholic school leaders. We began our retreat with a celebration of Mass, followed by leadership formation focused on academic excellence. On each of these occasions, our time together was engaging and fruitful.
As you can see from this “Back to School” issue of the Clarion Herald, many exciting things are happening in our local Catholic schools! Be sure to peruse this issue to learn more. It is an honor to serve the families of the Archdiocese of New Orleans. Special thanks to Archbishop Aymond and all of our pastors for their support of the ministry of Catholic education. I would also like to express sincere gratitude to each of you for your support of Catholic education and faith formation, especially those who entrust their children to our care.
