Have you ever sat in church and asked, “What’s happening?” or “Why is Father doing that?” If you have, that’s good! That means you’re curious and being curious is one of the best ways to grow in faith.
At Mass, we come together to pray, sing, listen to God’s Word and receive Jesus in a special way through the Eucharist. This is a time full of mystery and being curious helps you see past just the words and actions and ask “What is God doing right now? What can I learn from this?”
Mass is like a mystery story and there are clues all around you. It’s something amazing that you can explore. There is so much to learn and discover. Did you know that at Mass we use a special language that uses symbols to teach us about God?
When you go to Mass this Sunday, look around and see if you can find any of these symbols like the candles next to the altar. These candles remind us that Jesus is our light that always helps us find our way in the dark.
The words also teach us about God. This Sunday, listen to the readings from the Bible and to the priest’s homily (that’s the short talk). Listen like a detective.
Try this:
• Imagine the Bible story in your mind, like a movie. What does the place look like? Imagine you were there. What would you be thinking or feeling if you were one of the people in the story.
• Think: “What is God trying to tell me today?”
• If something doesn’t make sense, ask your parents, a teacher, or your deacon or priest later.
The more we learn about Mass, the closer we get to understanding God’s big plan of love. God loves when you ask questions and sometimes, his answers come in surprising ways through a word, a feeling, or someone else helping you.
