The Memorial of St. Lucy
Feast Day: December 13
Saint Lucy is a saint born in Sicily, whose feast is celebrated on Dec. 13. According to tradition, Saint Lucy was born to rich and noble parents in the year 283.
Like so many of the early martyrs, Lucy had consecrated herself to God and hoped to devote all her worldly goods to the service of the poor. Her mother had a different plan and arranged a marriage for Lucy (not because she was mean, but because she thought she was taking care of her daughter).
When Lucy rejected her fiance he became so angry that he told the authorities she was a Christian and she was arrested. When guards went to get her to face her punishment, they could not move her, even when they hitched her to a team of oxen!
The governor got so angry that he ordered her tortured and killed for her faith and commitment to Christ.
She is the patron saint of eyes; the blind, eye trouble and other eye ailments.
There is an archdiocesan St. Lucy Celebration every year on the Saturday closest to her feast day. This year's Mass is on her feast day, Dec. 13 at 4 p.m. at St. John the Baptist Church in New Orleans. All are welcome to attend!
