My oldest son decided to take a solo backpacking trip through Europe before starting law school. It was carefully planned, a 40-day journey through seven countries and countless cities. I jokingly referred to it as his “40 days in the desert.” It was meant to be the adventure of a lifetime, not necessarily a religious pilgrimage, until Mary intervened.
A few weeks before his departure, he shared his itinerary, which included Croatia. Without hesitation, I said, “You have to visit Medjugorje.” The suggestion surprised even me. Although our family has a deep devotion to Mary, we had never discussed visiting Medjugorje. Yet I had always felt drawn there after hearing so many stories of conversion and faith.
His first response was, “How close is it?” Without really knowing, I replied, “It looks close on the map.” He was gracious but unconvinced. He knew nothing about Medjugorje and would only be going for me.
The very next day, he updated me, “Mom, I booked a bus trip from Split to Medjugorje.” I was amazed at how quickly Mary opened the door.
But there was more. On the day of departure, the bus company refused to accept his electronic ticket and required a printed copy. Ten minutes before departure, they would not let him board. When he called, I could hear the despair in his voice. Immediately, I turned to our Blessed Mother, praying fervent Hail Mary’s and pleading to her to make a way. Deep down, I knew this trip was part of her plan.
Moments later, a solution appeared: he simply needed to purchase another ticket. Within minutes, he was on the bus.
What happened next is his story to tell, but he describes Medjugorje as one of the most powerful and faith-filled experiences of his life. Mary always makes a way. Call on her, trust her and she will lead you closer to her Son. We are all her children!
