Rev. Msgr. Allen Joseph Roy, a priest of the Archdiocese of New Orleans for over 70 years, died on September 5, 2025. He was 96 years of age.
Msgr. Roy was born on August 28, 1929, in Hamburg, La. to parents Allen Joseph Roy, Sr. and Lucille Plauche Roy.
He attended elementary and secondary school at St. Joseph Academy in New Roads and then St. Joseph Seminary College in St. Benedict. His seminary education was at Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans.
Msgr. Roy was ordained to the priesthood on June 5, 1954 at St. Louis Cathedral by Auxiliary Bishop L. Abel Caillouet.
His pastoral assignments include ministering as Assistant Pastor at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church in New Orleans, Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Violet, and Our Lady of the Rosary Church in New Orleans. His pastorates were at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Violet, St. Joseph Church in Chauvin, and Holy Spirit Church in New Orleans where he was the founding pastor in 1972. He served as pastor of Holy Spirit until his retirement in 2011.
In addition to his pastoral assignments, Msgr. Roy served as Chaplain of the 159th Evacuation Hospital, Assistant Director of Communications, Board of Regents, Archdiocesan Consultor, Dean of the Terrebonne Deanery and Algiers-Plaquemines Deanery, and was an Ecclesiastical Notary in the Matrimonial Tribunal. Msgr. Roy also served as the Director of the Program for Vocations.
Visitation for Msgr. Roy will be Friday, Sept. 12 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 13 from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at Holy Spirit Church, 6201 Stratford Place in Algiers (New Orleans) The Funeral Mass will follow at 11 a.m. of Sept, 13 at Holy Spirit Church. Burial will take place at a later date in New Roads
