Rules for a great marriage
Home
By Deacon W. Gerard Gautrau
Guest Column
The foundation of a great marriage is mutual respect. If we have it, we can do no wrong to one another; if we lose it, we can do no good.
To build the foundation, see yourself through the eyes of your spouse.
Act toward each other as you would have them act toward you.
Let your actions be expressed not just when in public, but also when alone.
Do unexpected nice things often for your spouse.
Never take each other for granted. To do this, just ask yourself, “What would I do if my spouse was gone forever?”
Keep in mind that foundations require reinforcement. The best reinforcement is faith in God and respect for his commandments.
Pray together daily.
Don’t be afraid to “agree to disagree.”
If feelings are hurt, be the first to say, “Will you forgive me?”
Remember that children are a mutual responsibility and that they come first.
Never let the opinions of others guide your decisions affecting your marital relationship.
When at a crossroad, take the road less traveled … together!
Respect and allow time for each other to pursue the outside interests that keep you sane.
Find time to “date” your spouse as often as possible.
When giving gifts to one another, it really is the thought that counts.
Remember, “We all only have one true love, and you married yours.”
