The April 24 District 9-5A track and field championship is just around the corner, and Catholic school runners used the April 11 Chubby Marks meet to lower their times.
One of the top 1,600-meter runners, Brady Mullen of Jesuit, ran a 4:18.77 to lower his most recent 4:19.74 in winning that event. His time was the 12th-fastest run by a local high school runner but fell short of his career best of 4:11.09 recorded in an out-of state meet two years ago.
Another, Lucy Quintana of Mount Carmel, won the girls’ 1,600 in 5:20.67, bettering an earlier clocking of 5:31.85. But she, too, has a better time of 5:16.47, set in 2024.
Dominican’s Grace Schneider was the only runner under 12 minutes in winning the 3,200-meter run, timed in 11:35.36 at the Marks meet.
In one of the closest finishes of the meet at Tad Gormley Stadium, Archbishop Shaw’s Matthew Berthelot (1:59.79) nipped Braeden Dunne of Brother Martin (1:59.82) at the finish of the 800-meter run.
Jesuit outpointed Brother Martin and 15 other teams to win the team trophy with 114 points. Northshore took the girls’ trophy with 75 points.
