Sister Gertrude (Gertrude Mary) Levy, D.C., died on Sept. 27, 2025 at Seton Residence in Evansville, Ind. She was born on Nov. 15, 1919 in New Orleans and was one of nine children of Albert and Henrietta (Schaeffer) Levy. She graduated from St. Joseph High School in New Orleans and entered the Daughters of Charity in St. Louis, Mo., in 1936. Sister Gertrude’s education continued at Fontbonne College (now University) in St. Louis, where she earned her bachelor's degree in mathematics in 1948 while serving as a House Mother at LA Orphan Asylum, Los Angeles (1947-1956).
After initial formation, Sister Gertrude served as a teacher in Long Beach, Miss., Mobile, Ala., New Orleans, La., Natchez, Miss.; and Donaldsonville, La. During her time as a teacher at St. Joseph High School in New Orleans (1956-1967), Sr. Gertrude earned her bachelor's degree in science (1962) and her master’s degree in counseling (1967), both degrees from Loyola University in New Orleans.
In 1970, Sister Gertrude began ministering as a Home Supervisor for Marywood Home of Holy Infancy in Austin, Texas (1970-1972). She then began her ministry in Development at Seton Hospitals in Austin, beginning with Community Relations Development at Seton Hospital, Austin (1972-1981).
She continued to serve in Austin as a Director of Volunteers at Holy Cross Hospital, as Assistant Director of Volunteers at Seton Northwest and as Community Ambassador and Fund Raiser at Seton Family of Hospitals until 2014 when she was missioned to Seton Residence. Along with serving as a Volunteer Development Office at Ascension St. Vincent Hospital in Evansville for several years, Sister Gertrude served in the Ministry of Prayer until the time of her death.
A Wake Service was held on Oct. 1, and the Mass of Christian Burial took place the following day, both held in the Seton Chapel. Interment followed at St. Joseph Cemetery. Sister Gertrude was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers Albert, Joseph, Louis, Francis and Rev. Michael Levy, OMI and her sisters Sr. Maxine Levy, D.C., and Sr. Muriel Levy, D.C. She is survived by her sister, Mary Brown, many loving family members, her Sisters in Community and many friends.
