On Jan. 11, the eve of her inauguration as the 63rd Mayor of New Orleans, Helena Moreno was honored at a special Mass at St. Louis Cathedral. New Orleans Archbishop Gregory M. Aymond was the principal celebrant with Coadjutor Archbishop James F. Checchio concelebrating with a number of local priests. Father Tony Rigoli, OMI, pastor of Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish, which is the mayor’s home parish, was the homilist.
During the homily, Father Rigoli offered encouraging words to Moreno reminding her that in her new position she must be ready for the unexpected and to put the good of the people first. Towards the conclusion of the Mass, interfaith clergy from throughout the city gathered in the sanctuary to offer a blessing for Moreno and her husband, Chris Meeks.
Following Mass, Moreno shared with media gathered outside that “being a humble servant” is something she prays for every night.
Moreno was sworn in as mayor on Jan. 12.
