We have been preparing throughout the nine weeks prior to the consecration (on June 14) with various common prayer intentions. More immediately, we will prepare by every parish offering a Holy Hour of Eucharistic Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament on Thursday June 4, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. I will lead the Holy Hour at our St. Louis Cathedral and hope to see those able to come there.
In front of a standing room only congregation gathered at St. Louis Cathedral on May 30, four men prostrated themselves on the altar and promised to live their lives as priests of Jesus. As Archbishop James Checchio ordained Father Brett Barrios, Father Will Sigl, Father Joseph Bui and Father James Vu priests of the Archdiocese of New Orleans, he reminded them there is nothing they could do to make themselves deserving of this gift of the priesthood, but that answering the call to this life is a response to the love of God for them and the love of God for His Church.

On Pentecost, this year celebrated on May 24, we celebrate a very special day in the Church: the day the Holy Spirit came to the apostles like a strong wind and tongues of fire. This is often called the “birthday of the Church”!
The Clarion Herald sat down with renown Catholic priest, podcaster and author Father Mike Schmitz before his May 18 “Parables” stop at New Orleans’s Saenger Theater. Because of the nature of the show and the Q&A session at the end, he described the evening as a unique one-of-a kind experience in an intimate setting that is always fresh and new each night.

Joal Betz Kuebel, the 86-year-old mother of nine and grandmother of 14, learned at an early age the necessity of a family support system and how important it is to cherish time with family members. She, along with her late husband Omer Kuebel, Jr., passed this devotion to her own family, and it is that devotion that has lead to her being named the 2026 Regina Matrum award recipient.
For centuries, the Catholic Church has set aside the entire month of May to honor Mary, Mother of God. The idea of a month dedicated specifically to the Blessed Virgin Mary can be traced back to baroque times. Although it was not always held during May, “Mary Month” included 30 daily spiritual exercises honoring Mary. The transition to the month of May being “Mary’s Month” is credited to the Jesuits but is rooted in customs that span both centuries and cultures, with roots going back as far as the Ancient Greeks.
Ten years ago, May 3, the Feast of Sts. Phillip and James, was a memorable day for me, as I was ordained a Bishop. When Pope Francis sent me to Metuchen as their bishop, I remember him saying, “you must know a lot of people and clergy in your new diocese since it is so close to your home.” ...In sending me to be your Archbishop this past year, Pope Leo sent me to a new area of the country in which I had never lived and, again, where I knew very few people. However, after only a few months here, I am filled with gratitude for your warm welcome and have been overwhelmed by your love, encouragement, kind notes, generous gifts and especially your prayers.
At St. Matthew the Apostle in River Ridge, dedication to innovation in education has garnered them recognition as an Apple Distinguished School for the 2025-2028 program term. Schools are selected through a rigorous application process that reviews how the school uses Apple products to make an impact in teaching and learning at their schools. St. Matthew is the only school in the Archdiocese of New Orleans and the first in the region to claim this esteemed distinction.
